How to Use YouTube for Transcribing
Now that you’ve found a client and they’ve sent you their video, here’s how you can transcribe it using YouTube. It’s free and doesn’t require any extra software. Here’s what you do:
- Upload the video to YouTube by clicking the Create button and selecting Upload Video.
- Leave the video unlisted so you can work on it privately.
- After a day or two, go to Subtitles (on the right side under the video settings), click the pencil icon to edit.
- YouTube will automatically generate captions (which are transcriptions), but you need to review and fix errors. For example, if the automated system says “cat fio” instead of “Kathio,” you can fix that!
Fixing Errors and Adjusting Timings
Once you’ve reviewed the video and fixed any errors, click the three dots at the top and download the file. This is the correct file to send to your client for their video to have accurate captions.
